By understanding and communicating our limits, we can cultivate healthier relationships and lead a more fulfilling, balanced life.

Understanding Your Needs and Values

The first step in setting boundaries is understanding your needs and values. Take time to reflect on what is important to you. What makes you feel valued and respected? What drains your energy or causes stress? By identifying these factors, you can pinpoint where boundaries are needed. Self-awareness is the foundation of healthy boundaries.

  1. Lead w/ the Positives. Start w/ a compliment.
  2. Give your answer. Remember, NO is a complete sentence.  Be Direct and Clear.  Start with a clear and concise "no."  Provide a Brief Reason (if necessary).  Offer a simple reason, but avoid over-explaining. For instance, "I have other commitments that need my attention.”
  3. Show your appreciation and thank them for the opportunity.  
  4. Encourage them & provide guidance when possible.  Suggest an alternative if you can. "Perhaps someone else on the team can help."
  5. Stand Firm!  Repeat your refusal if necessary.  Change the subject or simply excuse yourself.

Remember, no is a complete sentence. You don’t owe anyone an explanation for protecting your time and energy. Practice saying no to smaller requests to build your confidence for larger ones. It’s okay to put yourself first.

Dealing with Pushback

Inevitably, you may face pushback when you set boundaries. Stay firm and reiterate your limits calmly and assertively.
